Healthy Foods vs MacroNutrient Ratio Importance
Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are called macronutrients. Total quantity, quality and ratio between these three nutrients have huge influence on your health.
Almost all of popular diets, even Food Pyramid guide are based primarily on ratio between those three basic nutrients.
Zone Diet for example, instructs you to eat in ratio 1/2/3 or 1 g - 2 g - 3 g. What that mean?
It means that for 1 gram of fat (mainly monounsaturated fat, olive oil for example) you should eat 2 grams of proteins and 3 grams of carbohydrates.
In each meal you have to keep this ratio, otherwise Zone Diet will fail. Interesting isn't it?
Next example is Low Carb diet (one of many out there). You should eat no more than 100 grams of carbohydrates per day (depended of your body weight),
about 1 gram of protein per 1 kilogram of your body weight and no less than 200 grams of fat. If you don't you will get in trouble, is it really true?
I can tell you with absolute certainty that it is not true. Macronutrients ratios may play an important role only on the beginning of any diet plan;
they are useless in long distance nutritional planning. Just try to imagine our ancestors in deep, dark and cold forest with kitchen scale in one hand
and nutrient table in other...
The true is that macronutrients ratio must change every while in order to keep our organisms sharp and healthy.
Healthy organism is flexible and always ready for changes, why? Because healthy organisms work better on the edge between hunger and satiety.
Unhealthy organism is the one which is a bit sleepy and slow in any adaptations.
If you going to eat every day this same in same quantities you will make your body week and even worst, overloaded with calories and nutrients.
With diet is a bit like with exercising, if you want to keep good form and make most of your efforts you need to make changes every while
(in nature you will not find two identical days).
Otherwise your body will quickly adapt to present situation what will cause dangerous biochemical habits (pathways).
This is exactly what happened to us 10000 BC when we turned from hunters-gatherers into farmers, today you can see effects of this transformation
on streets of major cities (not only change in quality of food make us week but also change in quantity of foods we eat).
Diets based on ratios of macronutrients are history; they are relicts of nutrition "old" school.
These days really important are quality and quantity of healthy foods you eat. And one more thing about fat,
saturated fat is known to be very helpful in fight against many modern diseases like cancer, CHD, diabetes, skin problems, allergies and many more.
